Happy Makara Sankranti
Sankranti is a national festival in India. The word is derived from sat and kranti, meaning "good movement. Makara Sankranti clearly identifies a period of enlightenment, peace, prosperity and happiness in different parts of India.
The day on which the sun begins it journey northwards (uttarayana) is referred to as Makara Sankranti.
Sankramana means "To commence movement" and hence the name Makara Sankranti given to one of the largest, most auspicious, but varied festival in the Indian continent.
Makara Sankranti is one of the few major festivals that does not follow the lunar calendar. Instead it is celebrated according to the solar calendar and therefore always falls on the same day in the western calendar, January 14th.
This day has a very special significance because the day and night on Makara Sankranti are of exactly of equal hours.
The significance of this exchange is that sweetness should prevail in all the dealings. In Hindu belief, a person dying on this auspicious day directly goes to the heaven. Bhishma, an elder in the epic of Mahabharata, is said to have waited for this day to breathe his last.
Makara Sankranti is celebrated in various ways. It is kite flying day in Gujarat. It is a “rice” festival in parts of south India called Thai Pongal. In the Punjab it is an agricultural festival, Lodi. It is common to see worshippers bringing sweets made with sesame seeds as offering to the Deities in a temple on this day.
“Ellu bella thindu, Olle Maathu Aadu” (Eat sesame seeds and speak only good). Let the sweetness of Yellu and bella (Sesame seeds and Jaggery) prevail in all your dealings.
